Concrete Steps Calculator

Calculate the exact volume of concrete needed for any outdoor or entrance steps. Get premix bag count, cost estimate and formwork area for accurate quoting. Works in metric and imperial.

Quick answer: Each step volume = Width Γ— Tread Γ— Running Height Γ— Step Number. Steps stack β€” the bottom step carries all the weight above it. A 3-step stair, 1.2m wide, 280mm tread, 175mm rise = approximately 0.35 mΒ³.

πŸ“ How It Works

Concrete steps are calculated as a series of stacked rectangular prisms. Each step contributes its tread depth Γ— riser height Γ— width Γ— its step number (because lower steps support all steps above). The volumes are summed for total concrete required.

Step n Volume = Width Γ— Tread Γ— Riser Γ— n Total = Sum of all step volumes Order = Total Γ— (1 + Waste%)

πŸ“‹ Worked Example

4 steps, 1.2m wide, 280mm tread, 175mm riser: Step 1 = 1.2Γ—0.28Γ—0.175Γ—1 = 0.0588. Step 2 = Γ—2 = 0.1176. Step 3 = 0.1764. Step 4 = 0.2352. Total = 0.588 mΒ³. With 15% waste = 0.676 mΒ³ = 72 Γ— 20kg bags.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

NCC (National Construction Code) requirements: Riser height 115–190mm (aim for 175mm). Tread depth 240–355mm (aim for 280mm). The rule of thumb: 2Γ—Riser + Tread = 600–650mm. Outdoor steps are generally shallower (150mm rise, 300mm tread) than indoor stairs for safety in wet conditions.

For most residential concrete steps (3–5 steps), steel mesh or N12 bar at 200mm centres provides adequate reinforcement. For steps over 600mm high, steps on fill, or steps carrying vehicle loads, get engineer's specification. Always include bottom reinforcement β€” steps crack from the bottom first.

Steps have more formwork complexity than flat slabs, leading to more concrete waste from spillage. The stepped profile means more concrete is placed at heights and difficult angles. Allow 15% minimum for steps β€” more for curved or complex designs.

Build timber formwork for the sides and risers. The tread form is left open (concrete is screeded flush). Grease all formwork with release agent. Pour from the bottom step up, consolidating with a vibrator. Strike off each tread level. Strip side forms after 24 hours, riser forms after 48 hours.
