Roof Area Calculator
Calculate the true sloped surface area of any roof for accurate material and labour estimates. Works for gable, hip and skillion roofs. Enter your floor plan dimensions and roof pitch to get instant results.

📐 How It Works
The sloped roof area is always larger than the floor plan area. The difference depends on the roof pitch — steeper roofs have significantly more surface area than flat ones. A pitch multiplier converts the horizontal floor plan area to true sloped surface area. Eave overhangs are added to the building footprint before calculating.
📋 Worked Example
A 10m × 8m house with 0.6m eaves and 22.5° pitch: Plan area = 11.2m × 9.2m = 103.04 m². Roof area = 103.04 × 1.155 = 119 m². Order quantity with 10% waste = 131 m². At $42/m² Colorbond: material cost = $5,502.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
A pitch multiplier converts the horizontal floor area to the actual sloped surface area. A flat roof has a multiplier of 1.0. A 22.5° pitch (the most common in Australia) has a multiplier of 1.155 — meaning the roof area is 15.5% larger than the floor plan area. Steeper roofs have higher multipliers.
Roof pitch is measured as the rise over run. A 4:12 pitch rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. In degrees, 4:12 ≈ 18.4°. You can measure pitch with a level and tape measure on the rafter, or use a digital angle finder.
Because the roof slopes — you are covering a larger surface than the horizontal footprint. Plus eave overhangs extend the roof beyond the walls. Always calculate true sloped area for material ordering — using floor area will cause you to under-order, typically by 10–30% depending on pitch.
10% is standard for simple gable roofs. Use 12–15% for hip roofs which have more cuts at the hip ends. Use 15–20% for complex roofs with multiple valleys, dormers or skylights. Colorbond and other sheet roofing typically requires less waste than tiles.
