Tile Calculator

Calculate exactly how many tiles you need for any floor, wall, bathroom or outdoor area. Works for all tile sizes from mosaic to large format. Get tile count, adhesive and grout quantities instantly.

Quick answer: Tiles needed = Area ÷ Tile Area × (1 + Waste%). A 600×600mm tile covers 0.36 m². A 20 m² floor needs 20 ÷ 0.36 = 55.6 → order 62 tiles (10% waste).

📐 How It Works

Tile quantity is calculated by dividing the floor or wall area by the area of each tile including the grout joint. A waste factor is added for cuts, breakage and pattern matching. Adhesive coverage is typically 3–5 kg/m² depending on substrate and tile size.

Tile Area = (Tile Length + Joint) × (Tile Width + Joint) Tiles Net = Area ÷ Tile Area Tiles to Order = CEILING(Tiles Net × (1 + Waste%))

📋 Worked Example

Bathroom floor 3m × 2m using 300×300mm tiles, 3mm joints, 10% waste: Area = 6 m². Tile area = 0.303 × 0.303 = 0.0918 m². Net tiles = 65.4. Order 72 tiles. Adhesive: ~12 kg. Grout: ~2 kg.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Straight lay pattern: 10%. Diagonal (45°) pattern: 15%. Complex patterns or many cuts around obstacles: 15–20%. Large format tiles (600mm+) on floors with uneven shapes: 15%. Always buy slightly more than the calculator says — tile batches vary by shade.

Standard wall tiles (notched trowel): 2–4 kg/m². Floor tiles and large format: 4–6 kg/m². Heavy-duty outdoor tiles: 5–8 kg/m². Coverage varies by trowel notch size and substrate flatness. Always check the adhesive manufacturer's specification.

Yes — always buy at least 10% extra and keep leftover tiles for future repairs. Tile batches differ slightly in shade and texture. Finding a matching tile from a different batch years later for a repair is very difficult. Store spare tiles flat in a dry location.

Porous substrates (new concrete, fibre cement, plasterboard) should be primed with tile primer before adhesive application. This improves adhesion and prevents moisture from being absorbed too quickly from the adhesive. Always check the adhesive manufacturer's preparation requirements.
